Ralph Mupita, MTN Group’s president and chief executive, has been re-elected by his peers on the GSMA as a deputy chair, extending his term to December 2028.

MTN Group, which describes itself as Africa’s largest mobile operator, said the re-election keeps the African opportunity on the agenda of the global mobile industry body. By the end of June 2026 the group served more than 317 million subscribers across 19 markets, according to its own figures.

Mupita has been a deputy chair of the GSM Association since April 2025. He has led MTN Group since September 2020, having previously served as the group’s chief financial officer. He is also a founding commissioner of the International Telecommunication Union’s AI for Good Global Commission.

MTN said Mupita sees the GSMA as a platform that brings mobile operators, the wider technology ecosystem and policymakers to the same table to drive industry collaboration, investment and digital inclusion.

At MTN he is steering the group’s Ambition 2030 strategy, which the company summarises as One MTN and three platforms: connectivity, fintech and digital infrastructure. The company also cites Africa’s young population, with a median age of around 19, as an engine for economic growth.
