MK Party tells its agents to escalate election complaints to the IEC: "Speak up! Follow through!"
The party's official X account urged its election agents to raise concerns through their coordinators first and push unresolved issues up through party structures to the IEC.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has told its election agents to take every concern they encounter to the right channel, and to push serious or unresolved issues up through the party’s structures to the Electoral Commission.
In a post on its official X account on Wednesday, the party set out a chain for complaints. Party agents should alert their election coordinators immediately, it said, while serious or unresolved issues must be escalated through party structures to the IEC for attention.
The post ended with three short instructions: “Speak up! Follow through! Safeguard the vote!” It carried the hashtag #VoteMKParty and one photograph.
The message is directed inward, at the party’s own election machinery rather than at voters generally. It tells agents that a concern raised and then dropped is not enough, and that the party expects a complaint to move up its own lines until it reaches the commission that runs the election.
The MK Party is one of the newer entrants to South Africa’s national ballot and has campaigned hard on the argument that the country’s institutions have failed ordinary people. Its instruction to agents frames the IEC as the body where objections belong, and asks its own people to use it.
The post does not say what kinds of concerns the party has in mind, does not name any voting station, province or official, and gives no detail of a specific complaint. It is a general instruction to the party’s election agents, issued on the party’s own account.
The IEC has not responded to the post in the material available.
