Mandrax worth R16,000 seized in Steinkopf as police arrest two men
A 50-year-old man was arrested for dealing in drugs and a 47-year-old for illegal possession of ammunition in separate incidents in the Namakwa District on Thursday.
Police in the Northern Cape arrested two men, aged 50 and 47, in separate incidents in the Namakwa District on Thursday, 22 October 2026, the South African Police Service said in a media statement.
In the first incident, members of Springbok Public Order Policing executed a search warrant at a house in Steinkopf and found a 50-year-old man in possession of Mandrax tablets valued at more than R16 000. He was arrested at the scene and charged with dealing in drugs.
In a separate incident, the same members were conducting patrols in the area when they noticed a man walking in Brecherweg Street who appeared to be acting suspiciously. They stopped and searched the 47-year-old man, who was subsequently arrested for illegal possession of ammunition.
In a third incident in the same area, police found a suspicious package abandoned in front of a residential property. On inspection it contained methamphetamine and cocaine. No arrests have been made in connection with that discovery and further investigations are underway.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, commended the members involved for their efforts in combating drug-related crime and removing illegal ammunition from circulation. SAPS said the operations form part of its newly established Reset Agenda.
The statement was issued by Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe of the Office of the Provincial Commissioner, Northern Cape. It is a summary of the arrests rather than the case dockets themselves, and the charges have not yet been tested in court.
