JSE drops more than 2% as the rand slips and record fuel prices bite
Mining and financial stocks led the fall while Brent crude climbed back above $101 on the day South Africans were told to expect record petrol prices.
The JSE closed more than 2% lower on Wednesday 7 October 2026, a fall that ran through nearly every part of the market and landed hardest on the sectors South Africa depends on most.
Resources stocks, which include the mining companies that anchor the local bourse, dropped 3%. Financial stocks fell almost 3%. Gold was down 2% and platinum 5.5%. Only two things moved the other way, and neither of them is good news for households: Brent crude oil pushed back above $101 a barrel, and fuel prices were being set at record levels on the same day.
The rand weakened by more than 1% against the dollar.
The session followed a stronger day on Tuesday, when the rand was strengthening and the market looked steadier. Wednesday reversed that.
The combination matters beyond trading screens. A weaker rand makes imported goods more expensive, and a Brent price above $101 feeds directly into the petrol and diesel price South Africans pay at the pump. The transcript of the eNCA (YouTube) broadcast that reported the numbers put the fuel price and crude oil as the only items up on the day, at the moment record fuel prices were being recorded.
Mining and finance carry a large share of the JSE’s weight, so a 3% fall in resources and a near 3% fall in financials drags the index as a whole. Platinum’s 5.5% decline was the sharpest single move the broadcast reported.
The figures come from eNCA (YouTube), which published the broadcast on 7 October 2026.
