A 32-year-old police constable remains in custody after his arrest on allegations of rape, the South African Police Service said in a statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the Eastern Cape.
The officer was arrested on 19 September 2026 following an investigation into allegations that he raped a 15-year-old at Mjiba Street in Greenfields, Gqeberha.
He appeared before the Gqeberha Magistrates Court on Monday, 21 September 2026 and was remanded in custody. He is expected back in court on 22 September 2026 for a formal bail application.
The investigation is continuing, SAPS said.
SAPS management reiterated that police officers are expected to uphold the law, protect members of the community and conduct themselves with integrity and professionalism. Any member suspected of committing a criminal offence will be subjected to the same criminal justice processes as any other person, the statement said, because no one is above the law.
Enquiries on the matter can be directed to Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa on 071 366 1907.
