Government explains what ward councillors do as voters head to the polls

With local government elections under way, the official government account has set out, in isiZulu, the job voters are choosing people to do.

The Government of South Africa has used its official X account to explain, in isiZulu, what a ward councillor does, on the day voters are choosing them.

The post, tagged #GovZAUpdates and #LGE2026, says that on election day voters choose the councillors who will take their grievances to local government. Ward councillors, it says, play an important role in making sure that residents’ concerns are heard and addressed.

The message is a plain description of the job rather than an announcement of new policy. It frames the councillor as the link between a community and its municipality, the person through whom complaints about local services and conditions are supposed to reach the council and be fixed.

It was published with a photograph and carries no further detail on the elections themselves, no timetable and no results.

What the post does not do is tell voters how to judge a candidate, or what recourse they have if the councillor they elect does not carry their concerns forward. Those questions sit with the ballot each voter casts.
