Gauteng police confirm six women found dead in Ekurhuleni as Kekana appeals for information

The latest discovery came on Tuesday morning, when the body of a woman believed to be about 35 years old was found outside a clinic in KwaThema, Springs. She was found naked and her body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Police received a call about the discovery early on Tuesday.

Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Fred Kekana said the number of women whose bodies have been found in public spaces is now a matter of concern. “However minimal or insignificant people might think it is, anything or any person whom they saw or suspect,” he said. “We will truly appreciate that information because we need to get to the bottom of this.”

What police have established so far

The KwaThema discovery follows a series of deaths in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, where several bodies have been found over the past two months. One of those victims was identified as social runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.

Another woman’s body was discovered in Olifantsfontein on Monday, more than 20 kilometres from Rhodesfield. She was found partially clothed by a passerby.

Kekana said the ages of the victims and the locations where some of the bodies were found are among the factors investigators are considering. He said the geographic spread of the cases is one reason police are turning to communities for information.

He also cautioned against speculation that a serial killer is operating in the area. The arrest of the first victim’s boyfriend for her alleged murder is an important consideration when assessing whether the cases are linked, he said.

Police teams remain on the ground and are working to establish whether the cases are connected.

What the state is doing

Kekana’s appeal is the public face of an investigation that now spans several policing precincts on the East Rand, from Rhodesfield to KwaThema and Olifantsfontein. The police have not said the cases are linked.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has said no stone will be left unturned in the East Rand killings. Women in the affected communities have demanded action as the deaths have mounted.

Anyone with information is asked to come forward and assist investigators. Kekana’s message to the public was direct: someone saw something, and even a detail that seems minor to the person who holds it could matter to the investigation.

The consequence for people living here

The deaths have landed hardest on the women who live and travel through these East Rand communities, and on the families now waiting for answers. A body found outside a clinic in KwaThema is a discovery in a public place, on a route people walk every day.

The police have asked for patience as the probe widens, and they have asked for information. Those two requests sit together: the investigation is active, the teams are on the ground, and the gap police say they need closed is the gap between what someone saw and what has been reported.
