FF Plus says no party can win Johannesburg outright as coalition bill stalls
Franco de Lange says the Freedom Front Plus has spent a decade as a coalition partner in the city and warns that pending coalition legislation may not arrive in time.
No single party is likely to reach the 51% or 135 council seats needed to run Johannesburg alone, Freedom Front Plus politician Franco de Lange said in an interview with eNCA (YouTube).
De Lange, who was speaking about coalition accountability in the city, said the latest polling and the city’s demographic make-up make an outright majority unlikely. He described that as a statistical reality rather than a political preference.
Coalitions, he said, leave a bad taste with voters. Some have worked and some have not.
His party, he said, has tried to act as the adult in the room and to keep the other parties from each other’s throats, and he argued that a stable coalition agreement is the priority. He described himself as a proper coalition partner and said the Freedom Front Plus has been part of coalitions and coalition negotiations in Johannesburg since 2016, a period he put at 10 years.
De Lange pointed to the coalition bill that is still pending. He said he does not think it will make it in time, and called that a pity, arguing that accountability between coalition partners is essential. He also described the Freedom Front Plus as a stabilising factor in the city, while cautioning that partners have to be chosen carefully. He said some of those partners were visible on stage that night.
