The Eastern Cape’s top police officer, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, spent part of Sunday inside the SAPS Sarah Baartman District joint operation centre, where the force is coordinating its work around the local government elections.

The visit was framed by the South African Police Service as a readiness inspection. In its own account of the stop, the force said Ncata commended personnel for what it described as their hard work and dedication in ensuring a state of readiness to deliver safe, free and fair elections.

The joint operation centre is the point from which the district pulls together policing work for the election period. SAPS published three photographs from the visit alongside its statement, with no further detail on deployments, staffing numbers or specific areas of concern in the district.

Sarah Baartman stretches across a large stretch of the Eastern Cape, from the Karoo towns inland to the coast around Port Elizabeth, and takes in a mix of dense urban wards and sparsely populated rural municipalities where polling stations can sit hours apart. The force did not say which of those areas the operation centre is prioritising.

SAPS has not released figures on how many officers will be deployed in the district for the elections, what the operation centre’s specific tasks are beyond coordination, or whether any security risks have been identified. The statement names the commissioner’s praise for readiness and nothing further.

The post is one of a series of provincial readiness checks the service has publicised as election day approaches. What the public record shows so far is the inspection itself, and a force telling its own members they are ready.
