Diale-Tlabela opens 8km upgraded R568 link between Bronkhorstspruit and the N4

More than eight kilometres of the R568 in Bronkhorstspruit, Tshwane, have been rehabilitated and upgraded, and the route between the N4 and D670 intersections is now open to traffic.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela opened the road on Wednesday, describing it as a milestone for Bronkhorstspruit and the communities around it.

“This is more than a road project. It is an investment in safer mobility, improved access and the economic potential of this region,” she said.

The R568 is a rural major arterial road. It carries mobility over long distances and is used mainly by light vehicles and medium-sized trucks, which makes it a working road rather than a commuter shortcut.

That is the reason the department gives for the project. A rural arterial that fails does not just slow traffic. It raises the cost of moving anything along it.

What the contract covered

The work went well beyond a new surface. The scope covered the rehabilitation and upgrading of more than eight kilometres of road, the construction of surfaced shoulders, and the upgrading of key intersections.

It also included new road signs and markings, the rehabilitation of drainage infrastructure, and the installation of culverts, concrete side drains, channelling and stormwater management structures.

Drainage is the part of a road project a driver never sees and the part that decides how long the surface lasts. Water that cannot leave a road takes the road with it, and rural routes in Gauteng carry heavy seasonal rain.

Diale-Tlabela said the upgraded route strengthens the link between communities and economic activity in the region.

“A reliable road network is the backbone of a functioning local economy. The R568 connects farmers to markets, businesses to supply chains and communities to opportunities,” she said.

“By improving this corridor, we are creating better conditions for economic activity, supporting the movement of goods and strengthening the foundation for investment and job creation in Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding areas.”

The department expects residents, commuters, public transport operators, freight companies and other road users to see improved travelling conditions on the route.

The wider programme

Diale-Tlabela said the department will keep giving priority to infrastructure that delivers tangible benefits to communities.

“The opening of the R568 Road reflects our commitment to ensuring that infrastructure investment translates into real improvements in people’s daily lives. We will continue working to build and maintain a road network that supports safer mobility and better access across Gauteng,” she said.

That is the commitment on the record. The measure of it is maintenance, and the department has not published a maintenance schedule for the R568 in this statement, nor a final cost figure for the project.

The R568 now carries traffic between two of the busiest points in the eastern part of the province, and the N4 corridor it feeds is the route freight takes towards Mpumalanga and the Maputo corridor.

For a farmer outside Bronkhorstspruit, the difference is a shorter and cheaper trip to market. For a commuter, it is a safer shoulder and a road that drains. For a haulier, it is a route that can take medium trucks without the wear that a failing surface adds to a vehicle.

The project is complete and the road is open. The next dated step is the department’s own: it says it will continue building and maintaining the provincial network, and the R568’s drainage and surfacing are now the test of whether this particular investment holds.
