Cape Town car community takes to the road with purple flags against gender-based violence
A convoy of vehicles flew purple flags through the city after an organiser said the male-dominated car scene is where men need to be drawn into the fight.
A convoy of cars has taken to Cape Town’s roads carrying purple flags, in a drive organised to bring the city’s car community into the campaign against gender-based violence.
The initiative began about two weeks before the event, when one of the organisers messaged a friend with the idea of staging a drive and getting the car community involved. She said the car community in Cape Town is 70% male-driven, and that is where the effort had to start.
Speaking in a broadcast published by eNCA, the organiser said women are already doing what they can, including self-defence training intended to give them confidence and a sense of power back, and that men now need to stand in.
A second organiser described gender-based violence as a huge problem in the country, and said the aim was to bring together men who value the cause and show that the car community can be used as a driver for good.
Every vehicle in the convoy carried a purple flag, which the organisers said was to show that the participants were driving for change.
