Buffalo City ANC councillor hands himself in over assault case, appears in court today
The 55-year-old, who is contesting a second term in the local government elections, faces an assault charge in the KuGompo Magistrates' Court while his party promises internal disciplinary action.
A 55-year-old ward councillor in the Buffalo City Metro has handed himself over to police after allegations that he assaulted his wife, and appears in the KuGompo Magistrates’ Court today on a charge of assault.
Eastern Cape police say the councillor, who is an ANC member and is contesting a second term in the upcoming local government elections, presented himself at Beacon Bay police station on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, two days before his scheduled court appearance.
Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa said a case of assault was opened at the station. A counter case of malicious damage to property was opened by the councillor against his wife, who was released because of her injuries.
The party’s response
The ANC in the Eastern Cape has condemned the alleged incident. Provincial spokesperson Yanga Zicina said internal disciplinary action against the councillor will be instituted.
Zicina said the party cannot tolerate members who commit what he described as heinous crimes against women, and pointed to the national declaration of gender-based violence as a national disaster. He said there is zero tolerance for such conduct in the ANC and that those involved will be brought to book through the party’s internal processes.
What the case turns on
The matter sits at the intersection of two processes that run on different clocks. The criminal case proceeds through the courts, where the councillor is presumed innocent until the matter is decided. The party’s internal process runs separately, and the ANC has said it will act.
For residents of the ward, the immediate consequence is a public representative appearing in court on an assault charge while his name remains on a ballot for the local government elections. The case also carries the weight of a national declaration that treats gender-based violence as a disaster requiring a state-wide response, which is the standard the party itself has invoked.
What happens next
The councillor appears in the KuGompo Magistrates’ Court today. The ANC’s internal disciplinary process is expected to follow, though the party has not set out a timeline for it.
