Aspen takes local medicines case to SADC industrialisation week

Aspen Pharmacare sent senior executive Stavros Nicolaou to the 9th SADC Industrialisation Week, the company said in a statement published on 10 September 2026. The event, hosted by the Southern African Development Community with the South African government and the SADC Business Council, ran under the theme “Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World.” It served as a high-level precursor to the 46th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government.

The week brought together policymakers, business leaders, investors, academia and development finance institutions from across the region. Aspen, one of Africa’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers, said its participation reflected a continuing commitment to strengthening regional pharmaceutical value chains, advancing localisation and supporting resilient healthcare systems on the continent.

What the company put on the table

Aspen said the platform allowed it to press the case for public-private collaboration on the region’s healthcare and industrialisation priorities. Its stated position is that local pharmaceutical manufacturing, regulatory harmonisation, pooled procurement and stronger regional partnerships are critical to improving access to quality, affordable medicines, while also contributing to economic growth, skills development and job creation.

That is the company’s own account of its role and its argument. It is a position, not a result, and Aspen reported no figures, no agreements and no new capacity from the week.

The 2026 edition of the forum focused on agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, critical minerals beneficiation, infrastructure development, investment mobilisation, digital transformation and the empowerment of women and youth. Those priorities track the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap, which is anchored on industrialisation, competitiveness and regional integration.

Pharmaceuticals appearing on that list matters for a region that imports most of what its pharmacies dispense. A domestic manufacturing base is the difference between a health system that can respond to a supply shock and one that waits for a shipment. Aspen is the largest manufacturer in that space, which is why its voice carries in the room.

A South African company in a regional argument

Aspen is a South African company operating at continental scale, and the industrialisation agenda it addressed is the one that decides whether medicines are made here or bought in. Pooled procurement, in particular, is the mechanism that gives a regional manufacturer a predictable order book. Regulatory harmonisation is what stops a product approved in one member state from waiting years for clearance in the next.

The company said its participation underscored its role as a contributor to Africa’s industrial development agenda and its commitment to policies and partnerships that promote sustainable growth, regional resilience and improved health outcomes. It also said the event reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between governments, industry and regional institutions.

SADC Industrialisation Week is an annual forum rather than a decision-making body. The commitments that bind member states are taken at the Summit of Heads of State and Government, which this year’s programme preceded.
