Anti-Gang Unit seizes cocaine, meth and a firearm in two Cape Town arrests

Two people are in custody after separate police operations in Cape Town’s northern suburbs on Friday, 18 September, one in Uitsig and one in Elsies River.

Officers recovered a firearm and ammunition in Uitsig, and seized quantities of cocaine, crystal meth and Mandrax in Elsies River, CapeTown ETC reported. The arrests followed interventions by the South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit and Operation Lockdown III.

What the operations turned up

The Uitsig operation produced the firearm and ammunition. In Elsies River, police took cocaine, crystal meth and Mandrax out of circulation. Both arrests were made on the same day, in two separate actions under the same policing push.

The Anti-Gang Unit is the SAPS formation tasked with gang-related crime in the Western Cape, and Operation Lockdown III is the current phase of the province’s recurring high-density policing deployments. The two operations reported on Friday are the kind of work those units exist to do.

Why the northern suburbs

The northern suburbs corridor, which takes in Ravensmead, Uitsig and Elsies River, has carried a heavy gang and drug burden for years. A firearm recovered in Uitsig is a firearm that cannot be used in a shooting, and a batch of cocaine, crystal meth and Mandrax seized in Elsies River is stock that cannot be sold. That is the direct consequence for residents of those areas, and it is the measure by which these operations should be judged.

The state’s response

SAPS ran the operations through the Anti-Gang Unit and Operation Lockdown III, made the arrests and took the exhibits. The two suspects now enter the justice system, where the National Prosecuting Authority decides on charges and a court decides on bail. The Enquirer has asked Western Cape SAPS for the ages of the two arrested people, the specific charges they face and their first court appearance dates, and will report the answers.

What happens next

The two suspects are expected to appear in court, where the charges will be put to them and bail will be considered. That appearance is the next dated step in this case, and it is where the firearm, the ammunition and the drugs become evidence rather than exhibits.
