A 17-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of murder after the South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit traced him to the Vygieskraal informal settlement in Athlone, Cape Town.

The arrest took place on Sunday, 18 October. It relates to a fatal shooting reported on Lower Klipfontein Road on 24 August 2026. The teenager appeared before the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 October.

As CapeTown ETC reported on 19 October, SAPS confirmed the arrest and the two murder counts in a social media update.

In a separate incident at Vygieskraal, police officers on foot patrol noticed a man behaving suspiciously and searched him. Officers reportedly found a 9mm pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition in his possession. He was arrested on charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

The two arrests are not linked in the material supplied. They happened at the same settlement, and the firearm arrest came out of a routine foot patrol rather than the tracing operation that produced the murder charge.

The Anti-Gang Unit is a specialist SAPS unit, and its involvement in a case from August points to how long a fatal shooting can sit on the books before a suspect is found. Athlone and the surrounding Cape Flats suburbs have carried a long record of gang-related shootings, and the recovery of a 9mm pistol with 15 rounds in the same area on the same weekend is the kind of detail residents will recognise. An unlicensed firearm on the street is a working tool, and ammunition in that quantity is not a collector’s item.

A 17-year-old in the dock on two murder counts is also a fact about who is being drawn into this violence and at what age.

What the public record does not yet show is the evidence behind the charge, whether anyone else is sought for the Lower Klipfontein Road shooting, or how the teenager pleaded. He appeared in court on Monday and the case is now before the Athlone Magistrates’ Court.

The Enquirer has not been able to establish further detail from SAPS beyond what has been published, and will report the court record when it is available.
