ActionSA says the home of its councillor candidate in Ramotshere Moiloa Ward 12, in the North West, was burnt down overnight. The party reported the incident on its official X account on Sunday, saying the home was “reportedly burnt down”.

According to the same post, ActionSA Deputy President Dr Mbahare Kekana travelled to the ward on Sunday, accompanied by the party’s North West Chairperson, Masego Kodisang. The post was published with four photographs from the party.

That is the extent of what the party has placed on the record. ActionSA has not named the candidate, has not said whether anyone was injured, and has not said what it believes happened or who it holds responsible. It has not described the extent of the damage beyond saying the home was burnt down.

The Enquirer has no independent confirmation of the fire, its cause or its circumstances beyond the party’s own account.

ActionSA’s public position on safety and local government is that residents are entitled to hold their representatives to account and that political contest should not put candidates or their households at risk. The party has consistently campaigned on enforcement of the law and on stronger state capacity, and it presents itself as the alternative for voters who want that delivered at municipal level. Those are the party’s stated positions, attributed to it.

The visit by Kekana and Kodisang places the party’s national and provincial leadership in the ward itself rather than issuing a statement from an office. ActionSA has not said what the delegation did on the ground, whether it met the candidate or the family, or whether it laid a complaint with the South African Police Service.

Ramotshere Moiloa is a local municipality in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district of the North West, and Ward 12 is one of its contested seats. The party has not said when the by-election or municipal contest in the ward is due, or whether the incident changes its campaign there.

The Enquirer has asked ActionSA for the candidate’s name, the circumstances of the fire and whether a case has been opened. No response had been received at the time of publication.
