229 arrested across Ekurhuleni in weekend police sweep, two liquor outlets shut
Detectives traced 162 of the suspects on Saturday alone, with 16 held for gender-based violence and 86 for contact crime.
Police arrested 229 suspects across Ekurhuleni policing precincts over the weekend and shut down two illegal liquor outlets, in a joint operation that ran from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning.
The operation, mounted under the Safer Festive Season banner and named Shanela II, brought together Ekurhuleni SAPS members, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic, community policing forums, Home Affairs and other law enforcement agencies.

Detectives accounted for the largest share. On Saturday, tracing operations across the district produced 162 arrests. Of those, 86 were for contact crime, 57 for other serious crime, 13 for property-related crime and 16 for gender-based violence.
The remaining arrests were made by other units during the broader weekend operation. Police did not provide a breakdown of those cases in the statement.
The operation is one of a series SAPS has run in Gauteng in the run-up to the festive season, when the service typically increases visibility and tracing activity. The statement did not say how many of those arrested would appear in court, on what specific charges, or when.
